Wagga Wagga (pronounced "Wogga Wogga", and often just shortened to "Wagga") is a city in the Riverina region of New South Wales, straddling the Murrumbidgee River and home to around 70,000 people. It sits almost equidistant from Australia's two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and about 250km by road from the Nation's capital of Canberra. With major hospital and other medical facilities, university campuses, defence force bases, vibrant industries and all the usual educational, sporting, dining & entertainment options of a mid-size city it is also the hub of one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country.
The funny name comes from the language of the local Wiradjuri indigenous peoples. Although previously thought to mean "crow", "Wagga" is now understood to mean "dance" or "celebration". When doubled, it means "many dances" or "many celebrations", so today we think of Wagga Wagga as a place of many celebrations!
